Victory Scholar 22/23 Blogs – Camila Casanueva (Griffith College, Dublin) | ‘We Are Family’ |

Hey everyone! It was a busy but fun filled first week with Sport Changes Life! Landing in Dublin was quite the mix of emotions as I did not know what to expect but also a sense of excitement to meet my fellow victory scholars and SCL staff. It wasn’t long before I started to feel at ease as everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming. Our induction week was filled with many highlights, one of my favorite days being spending time with the elderly playing pickleball, boccia ball, badminton, and table tennis. It was a great way to start our week and engage with the local community in Belfast. Not to mention, it was inspiring to see the many ways one’s competitive edge does not age. The trash talk among bocce balls was unmatched!

We definitely made the most of our first five nights together. Obviously it is a bit sad to see us all go our separate ways for the year but it is safe to say we will be planning trips to see one another throughout Ireland and the rest of Europe. One of the best things about sport is that it brings people from all over the world, with different backgrounds together, and that is exactly what SCL did for all of us as victory scholars. For me, just getting to know my fellow scholars and what brought us all here gave me a greater perspective for what we can accomplish in our time here. Even though we all just met each other a week ago, it really does feel like we have known each other for years. One of my favorite moments from the week was walking down to catch the sunrise with Freeman and Zach. Watching the sun rise above the horizon, taking a second to appreciate where we were, why we were here was a great way to cap the week and begin our next journey.
